Israel: The life of Kalu Baba, a resident of Pushkar of Indian origin, is an inspirational story, which is an example of the fusion of different cultures. Kalu Baba, who hails from Pushkar, Rajasthan, came to Israel years ago. There, he started a restaurant, which gradually became a popular place among the soldiers. His restaurant is special for those Israeli soldiers who are posted on the border area of Lebanon and Syria. Here, Kalu Baba provides Indian cuisine and a homely atmosphere in his restaurant for those soldiers.
Kalu Baba’s aim is not just to do business, but he sees serving those soldiers as a duty who are ready to protect the country in difficult circumstances. His female partner “Lital”, who is of Israeli origin, supports him in this work. Both of them together boost the morale of the soldiers not only through dishes but also with their friendly behavior.
For many years, Kalu Baba and his Israeli female partner Lital were living in the border area, where the situation is often challenging. The atmosphere here can be tense at any time, especially due to the uncertain situation of the soldiers deployed on the border. But despite these challenges, Kalu Baba’s dedication and spirit of service strengthens him every day. He has adopted the culture of Israel, and at the same time kept his Indian origin and traditions alive, due to which he is acting as a bridge between the people of both the countries.
Sumit Sharma of Pushkar, also known as ‘Kalu Baba’, is serving 100% vegetarian Rajasthani ‘Thali’.
Sumit Sharma, who has been living in Israel for the last 8-10 years, told that food is being served to 150 soldiers every day. Despite the war, deaths and destruction in the country, Sumit refuses to leave.
He said, “How can I leave the country that has given me so much? People here eat Rajasthani food regularly and I am happy to serve them food. Today Israel is being attacked continuously by Hamas. I do not feel like leaving the country in this sad time.”
Sumit Sharma is popularly known as ‘Kalu Baba’ from Pushkar, Rajasthan. He came to Israel in 2013 and runs a restaurant in the Golan region. He is also planning to get married in a Jewish family in Israel.
Kalu Baba’s partner, an Israeli woman named Lital, who was famous for cooking Indian food for Israeli soldiers posted in the Lebanon border area, has a unique story. She became a fan of Indian food and brought this art among the soldiers. Her efforts created a unique bridge between Indian and Israeli culture.
Lital’s initiative was highly appreciated among the Israeli soldiers posted in the area where they were working away from their country. The variety and taste of Indian food made the dining experience of the soldiers special. The Indian dishes prepared by him such as curry, Rajasthani thali, veg biryani, and naan made a special place in the hearts of the Israeli soldiers.
This story is a symbol of cultural relations and mutual cooperation between people of India and Israel. Due to this contribution of Lital, he not only won the hearts of the soldiers but also took the popularity of Indian food to a new level.
He used to run his restaurant in the Lebanon and Syria border area since the time of war. Now he is going to open his new restaurant named Kalu Baba in Tel Aviv.
